Intro

Samara Private Game Reserve is a passionate conservation undertaking, a leader in its area and a catalyst for change in the Great Karoo region of South Africa. 70,000 acres have been restored over 20 years in the area that previously witnessed one of the world’s largest migrations – when millions of springbok would roam these plains in search of new pastures. As well as the multitude of antelope, herds of elephant moved through the verdant river systems, special desert- adapted black rhino thrived in the dense thickets, and the predators – Cape lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena, even wild dog – accompanied the melee of prey species across this breathtaking landscape. Resurrecting this malaria-free ‘Serengeti of the South’ and returning the landscape to its former glory forms an integral part of our vision.

Surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of mountains, Karoo Lodge sits in perfect harmony with the reserve's pristine wilderness. Combining colonial comforts with the essence of Mother Nature, this converted farmstead treats you to exceptional service, enabling you to relax and allow the tranquillity of the Karoo to envelop your senses.

Highlights
  • 70,000 acres of wilderness

Safaris

Tracking Wild Cheetah and Rhino on foot

Experience an exhilarating walking safari by tracking wild cheetah and rhino on foot - both black and white. Get within metres of these endangered and iconic species in their natural environment.

Bush Walks and Fly-Camping

We encourage getting off the vehicle and getting close to nature by exploring it on foot. Study the finer detail of the bush and experience the feeling of wide open spaces around you - no vehicles, no noise, no rush. Day-long hikes to fly-camps set up in the wilderness can be arranged on request.

Bird Watching

There are over 220 species of birds recorded on the reserve, with new additions being discovered on a monthly basis, so this is a bird watcher’s paradise. In winter you are most likely to view the endangered Blue Crane in flocks of up to 200 individuals and may be lucky enough to see Black Eagles soaring below you from Eagles’ Rock, one of our magnificent view points.

Tracker Academy

Samara is home to the Tracker Academy, a division of the SA College for Tourism and funded by the Peace Parks Foundation, which trains 16 young individuals per year in the ancient art of tracking. Accompany the trainee trackers on their morning walks, led by Master Tracker Pokkie Benadie, and learn about the secrets of the bush. Subject to availability.

Shorter ‘bumble’ game drives and/or bush walks can also be organised during the middle of the day when other guests are not on drives.

Dedicated Aardvark Children's Programme on offer at Karoo Lodge during school holidays in June, July and August.

It caters exclusively to children and young teenagers. Qualified staff will take your brood off your hands and engage them in a variety of fun and educational activities whilst you relax and unwind.

Activities include, amongst others:

  • Bushwalks
  • Spoor identification
  • Rock painting like a Bushman
  • Dung spitting competitions
  • African crafts
  • Orienteering and navigating
  • Storytelling
  • Sleep-outs (weather-dependent). These can also be organised for the whole family!

Programme dates available on request. Facilities for football, croquet and table tennis are available all year round. The swimming pool at Karoo Lodge is fenced off for safety reasons.

Pricing

Children 0-3 years are free of charge (excluding Sibella Suites). Children from 3rd to 14th birthday pay 50% of adult rate (excluding Sibella Suites). Children 14 and older must take their own room at adult rates.

A maximum of 2 children can be accommodated in Karoo Suites, and a maximum of 1 child in Lodge Suites, sharing with 2 adults.

Childminding

When their parents are on a game drive or otherwise away from the lodges, children younger than 8 must be placed under the care of the experienced childminders available. We encourage them to take part in ‘active babysitting’, involving activities such as short walks, collecting bugs and playing in the dedicated children’s play area with sandpit, swing and slide fenced off from the main lawn (Karoo Lodge only). Babysitting for infants and toddlers is also available. The fee is R100 per hour, available all year round.

Accommodation

Four Lodge Suites situated in the main homestead are light and airy, all opening out on to the wide wrap-around veranda. Each has a luxury en-suite bathroom and is air-conditioned. One extra bed can be accommodated for families with a child.

Three Karoo Suites are individual Karoo-style "cottages" situated a short walk from the main house, offering a bit more privacy. Each has a luxury en-suite bathroom, is air-conditioned and has a fireplace. They even have outdoor showers with magnificent views!

In honour of Sibella, our legendary female cheetah, we also have the Sibella Suites - two en-suite interleading rooms overlooking a waterhole where birdlife abounds and animals come to slake their thirst. Perfect for families with small children.

Weather

Summer in the Karoo can be very hot, with temperatures reaching over 35 degrees Celsius. The height of summer is the period December-February. Expect hot sunny days with the occasional afternoon thunderstorm, with temperatures dropping after dark.

The Karoo experiences winter during the months of June, July and August. Temperatures fall significantly and it is not unusual for there to be snow on the highest mountain peaks. Daytime temperatures are mostly mild and balmy, though evenings and early mornings are cold.

The transition months are some of the most beautiful and underrated, both in terms of weather and game-viewing. From the end of March through to May, daytime temperatures are typically milder than in summer, although the mercury begins to drop at sunset.

Spring time is from September to November, and the weather is similar to that of Autumn, except that the days start to get longer and the temperatures warmer as Summer approaches.
